Why do people use silly stereotypes?

Posted by admin on March 10th, 2010 and filed under silly people | 8 Comments »

I am scared of coming out to my friends and family as I fear they will laugh and say stereotypical lesbian things about me.

I know I am being silly but why do people use these stereotypes?

People use these stereotypes when they do not fully understand a persons situation.
Your situation clearly is you’re a lesbian, so the stereotypes would be, you’re not feminine, you act mannish…which I am sure are not true.

Stereotyping leads to prejudice, which can lead to discrimination, your best bet is simply…ignore it.

Your main goal in life is to be happy in who you are, not to worry about what others say or think about you. I know that that is very, VERY hard to do though.

But would you rather them laugh with you or fall out with you over your sexuality. If you come out the jokes and jibes will stop.

Don’t listen to what anyone says dear, never let someone belittle you :)

Well, ALL stereotypes have some truth in them, but they are often spawned from the more extreme actions, and are then made into generalisations.

Stereotypes are just a frame of reference. Sometimes, they are not even negative. South Park did an episode about stereotypes, and one of the positive ones they used was that people expect all Asians to be good at math. But, that of course is a stereotype and not necessarily true.

stereotype is often just a word that is used to diminish the importance of another person’s opinion. So if a person make a judgment against lesbians that doesn’t sound original or shows evidence of a lot of thinking, it becomes "stereotypical." As you might notice, calling things stereotypical is also a pretty stereotypical thing for people to do. The word is useless, best to remove it from your vocabulary. If you want approval from friends and family, and know it is impossible to attain, then it’s probably not worth raising the issue. But you could be surprised, and if they know you genuinely are that way, and aren’t just in a "confused" period of your life, then they pretty much have no option but to try to accept it or disown you. Usually they don’t disown you, but may want to keep their distance. And that’s understandable.
