Why does solitary confinement make people crazy? What effect does solitary confinement have on the brain?

I was watching National Geographic about Alcatraz, and they said something about how people go crazy from solitary confinement. What does solitary confinement do to the brain?

Everybody needs a certain stimulus to keep them away from boredom. (Not saying that everybody needs to be extro or introverted)Not having any social or physical interactions can lead to things like hilusonations and major depression
