The Boswell Sisters – Connee (L), Vet (C-Standing) and Martha (R – piano), began their careers in New Orleans. Connee was paralyzed from a childhood accident (or had polio according to the comments of several viewers) and always had to perform seated. The sisters worked at a New Orleans radio station where they were given a daily singing program. The sisters were talented musicians in other ways. Martha was an accomplished pianist, Helvetia (Vet) played the violin, banjo and guitar, and Connee played cello, sax, and guitar. In 1930 when they recorded four songs for Okeh their careers took off and they moved to New York where they made national radio broadcasts, signed with Brunswick in 1933, and were one of America’s hottest groups from 1933 to 1936. They made movies, recorded with the Dorsey Brothers and were national broadcast regulars until 1936 when Martha and Vet retired. Connee continued a solo singing career.
The trumpet backing the sisters was Bunny Berigan. There is a post of his recording “Can’t Get Started with You” elsewhere on this channel.
